A satoshi— or “sat” for short — is the smallest unit of Bitcoin. Just as a dollar splits into 100 cents, one bitcoin splits into 100 million satoshis. What a satoshi is
Bitcoin isn't indivisible. Every bitcoin can be broken down into 100,000,000 satoshis — one hundred million of them. So the math is simple:

Where the name comes from
The unit is named after Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous person or group who published the Bitcoin white paper in 2008 and released the first software in 2009. The name caught on within the community as the natural word for Bitcoin's smallest piece, and it stuck. You'll see it written as “satoshi,” “sat,” or in the plural “sats.”
Why that much divisibility matters
Because one bitcoin can be worth a large amount, being able to split it into a hundred million pieces is what keeps Bitcoin usable for small, everyday amounts. You never have to buy a “whole” bitcoin. You can own — and spend — a few thousand sats just as easily as a full coin. Owning 50,000 sats is completely normal; it's simply 0.0005 BTC written a friendlier way.
This is also why “stacking sats” became a phrase: people accumulate Bitcoin a little at a time, and counting in sats makes small purchases feel like meaningful progress instead of a long string of zeros after a decimal point.
You don't buy sats separately
Why fees are priced in sats, not dollars
When you send Bitcoin, the network fee isn't quoted in your local currency — it's quoted in sats per virtual byte (sat/vByte). A virtual byte is a measure of how much block space your transaction takes up, and you pay a chosen number of sats for each one. A simple send might be around 140 vBytes; at 10 sat/vByte that transaction costs roughly 1,400 sats in fees.

Learning to think in sats
Most newcomers picture Bitcoin as a decimal of a whole coin — 0.00042 BTC — which is awkward to read and easy to misjudge. Flipping to sats makes those numbers human again: 0.00042 BTC is simply 42,000 sats. The conversion is just moving the decimal point eight places, or multiplying by 100 million.

As a bitcoin's value rises over the years, thinking in sats also keeps small purchases and fees feeling concrete — a fee of “a few thousand sats” is easier to reason about than a long fraction of a coin. Many wallets now let you toggle the display between BTC and sats; flipping to sats early builds the habit.
A quick word on “bits”
Before sats became the common shorthand, some wallets used an intermediate unit called a bit, where 1 bit = 100 sats(so there are one million bits in a bitcoin). You'll occasionally still see it, but the community has largely settled on sats as the everyday unit. If you run across “bits,” just remember to multiply by 100 to get back to satoshis.
